Delay in Panchayat elections due to corona, elect after 3 month
The Gujarat Election Commission has postponed the municipal and panchayat elections due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The elections for local bodies of self-governance including six municipal corporations, 55 municipalities, 31 district and 231 taluka panchayats were scheduled to be held in November.
After taking stock of the pandemic situation, the Commission has announced that the polls would be postponed for three months. Now, the elections for civic bodies of Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara, Jamnagar and Bhavnagar and the district panchayats will be held in 2021. Even after three months, the Commission would review the situation and will decide whether to further delay the polls or hold them.
According to sources, the government is likely to appoint administrators for the local bodies once the term of their elected wings is over.
“It is not possible to hold the local elections because the entire machinery is involved in handling the pandemic,” a State government official said.

Introduction: As per section 13 (1) of Gujarat Panchayat Act, 13, as shown in Appendix (1) and Appendix (2), out of 31 District Panchayats of the state, term of 30 District Panchayats is 31/12/2030, 01 District Panchayat term is Dt. 8/12/2030 and out of 31 taluka panchayats, the term of 239 taluka panchayats is 31/12/2040, 01 taluka panchayat term is 17/12/2030 and other 01 taluka panchayat term is 08/01/2021.
Happens. As per Section 16 (1), Section 13 (1) (a) and Section 13 of the Gujarat Panchayats Act, the term of the Panchayats shall be up to 5 years from the first sitting and the right to hold general elections before the expiry of the term is vested in the State Election Commission. But according to the declaration of the State Election Commission dated 19/10/2050 on the number (1) taken from the reading, “The circumstances of the present natural calamity are exceptional and exceptional, considering the prevailing situation of Kovid-12.
So that the Commission comes to the conclusion that by holding timely elections in 21 District Panchayats and 21 Taluka Panchayats in the Panchayat areas keeping in view the constitutional and legal provisions.
